President Barack Obama has ordered intelligence officials to conduct a broad review on the election-season hacking that rattled the presidential campaign and raised new concerns about foreign meddling in U.S. elections, a White House official said Friday.

453. China Fails to Block UN Meeting on North Korea Rights

The U.N. Security Council discussed the situation of human rights in North Korea on Friday, despite efforts by China to block it.
It was only the third time the 15-nation council has taken up the issue, usually reserved for other bodies, including the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly. The council has held what has become an annual meeting on the topic since December 2014.

A rising tide of automation and some trade deals have cost the United States millions of manufacturing jobs in recent years, leaving many people unemployed or in jobs with poor pay, few benefits, and no future.

455. Heroin Overdoses Now Kill More Americans than Gun Homicides

In 2015, for the first time ever, the number of heroin overdoses in America outnumbered the number of gun homicide deaths, according to new government statistics released Thursday.
Deaths from heroin overdoses spiked by 23 percent in 2015, up to 12,989, while the number of gun deaths, which also rose, landed at 12,979, according to data released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as part of its annual report on the number of deaths and death rates.

Schools in Kenya are out for a holiday, but a group of 10 volunteers in Mathare, one of Nairobi's most dangerous slums, is encouraging children to come to pop-up centers to read donated storybooks. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday Russia and Syrian government forces will continue their bombing raids in Aleppo until rebels vacate the city.
"After a humanitarian pause, [the strikes] have resumed and will continue for as long as the bandits are still in Aleppo," Lavrov told reporters while attending a security meeting in Hamburg, Germany.

A newly released survey of U.S. voters and poll workers suggests that a slender majority of Americans say they generally trust the accuracy of voting systems and the count, but fully 20 percent do not have confidence in the national election voting tally.
