229. One Simple Technique That Can Change Your Life Forever
April 14, 2014

When I was in graduate school studying music composition, my singing professor told me that I was not using my ‘real’ voice when I spoke. I had no idea what she was talking about. I thought the voice you had was the voice you would always have. She then explained that the pitch of my habitual speaking voice was too high and that my ‘real’ or true voice was lower by several steps. What I also did not know that was in order to achieve that warmer, deeper, more mature sound, I had to not only use my chest cavity to power my sound but I had to breathe with the support of my diaphragm as... 230. The Best Way to Care for Your Voice
April 14, 2014

Did you know that your vocal cords are an organ? And, just as the other organs in your body need good nutrition, plenty of sleep, and the avoidance of smoking and drugs, your vocal cords do as well. Consisting of two small bands of muscle, the cords were previously thought to act like the strings of a guitar or piano – hence their name. With the advent of a video camera which could fit down the throat, however, it was discovered that the cords functioned more like puffs of tissue, rapidly opening and closing. This is why many refer to them as vocal folds. Whatever you want to ca... (read more)

232. Do You Know the #1 Thing All Good Public Speakers Have in Common?
April 09, 2014

There are a number of traits that dynamic speakers have in common, all of which culminate in one specific attribute. Please note that not all ‘professional’ speakers are great in their delivery skills so I am not talking about everyone who makes a high salary on the public speaking circuit. There are many, many dynamic speakers who are not being paid to speak professionally. Making eye contact. Good speakers will scan the room and make eye contact with their audience. Staring at an object or the wall or being glued to your PowerPoint presentation is not making eye contact. This is kno... (read more)

233. Spending Too Much Time Repeating Yourself Is a Waste of Time
April 09, 2014

Unless there is a physiological problem, i.e. a paralyzed vocal cord, everyone has the ability to speak in different volume levels. My complaint with the soft-spoken is that they do not speak at a normal volume level. Notice what I just said. NORMAL. If you are soft-spoken, then you do not speak in a normal level of sound. There, I said it and I will say it again. Normal means that others can hear you in most situations. What you need to understand is that we, who have bigger voices, tire of straining to hear you. We tire of asking you to repeat yourself. If you have ever wondered... (read more)

234. Your Voice Is Your Calling Card - Is That Good Or Not So Good?
April 09, 2014

One of the 1st things you do when you start a new business is to create a business card. While the purpose of the card is to identify you and your business, your goal with that card is to project a positive image of that business. In fact, you should probably hire a creative talent to design your card because you want an image that looks professional and successful. Your voice is a form of calling card as well. When you consider that the sound of your voice accounts for a good 37% of the image you project, what does yours say about you? Does it sound professional? What about over the... (read more)

235. One of the Most Important Things You Should Do in Public Speaking
April 01, 2014

It is something your audience would appreciate. It is something your body would be thankful for. And, it is something your mind could use. It is called the pause and it is something many novice speakers (and even some renowned ones) do not do. If your goal is to get your presentation over with as quickly as possible, then there is a very good chance that you do not allow yourself – or your audience – the luxury of the pause. This seemingly insignificant little break within a sentence, at the end of a sentence, or at the beginning of a new paragraph or topic is one of the most importan... (read more)

236. 3 Steps for a More Mature-Sounding Voice
April 01, 2014

The number of adult voices I hear which sound like teenagers, preteens, or younger still is astounding. Add the familiar Valley Girl sound to the picture and you have an image which does not project maturity. I am not talking about sounding old. I am talking about a voice which you would call ageless. If you were to phone me and did not know how old I was, you would be unable to tell if I was 25 or 75. Because my voice has had training and I have taken the stress or the pressure away from my throat and vocal cords, my voice is not aging as quickly as those whose voices have not had ... (read more)

237. Public Speaking: Ethics and Political Correctness
March 25, 2014

When creating your material for a speech or presentation, it is important to consider ethics in what you say because your integrity depends on it. Your ability to establish a career as a public speaker will be determined not just by a dynamic delivery, but by several other factors as well. Is what you are saying fair, just, honest, and/or moral? If your ethics are in question, you will get caught sooner or later. Kevin Trudeau, the renowned infomercial host, author, and radio personality was sentenced to prison for bilking his customers. Numerous news services reported that U.S. Dist... (read more)

238. Could Your Voice Use Some Color?
March 25, 2014

I hear it all the time. People complaining that their voice is boring; that it lacks excitement or emotion. Let me ask you a question. If you feel this way about your voice, can you give yourself permission to show some emotion, to allow for some excitement in your expression? You may find this to be a strange request, but when it comes to the voice which is a monotone, it is a most legitimate question. Everyone feels emotion; however, not everyone is comfortable showing it. Some people tell me that they will look silly if they let others see and hear how they feel. Really? I... (read more)

239. Stop Raising Your Inflection at the End of Your Sentences - You Sound Like a Valley Girl!
March 18, 2014

If you want an image that exudes confidence, one of the things you should do is to stop the rise of your inflection at the end of your sentences. I call this the Valley Girl sound or Valley Girl-ese. Unfortunately, it does not sound mature. Inflection refers to the rise or fall of the pitch of the voice. The voice naturally rises when you ask a question; however, at the end of a statement, the pitch of the voice usually drops. When you raise the pitch as you finish speaking, that lilt or cadence on the upswing makes you sound unsure of yourself. It is a habit which is learned and i... (read more)

240. If You're Constantly Asked to Repeat Yourself, Is It Because Your Diction Is Not Clear?
March 18, 2014

If others ask you to repeat yourself – a lot – is it because your diction is not clear? Too often, those who are asked to repeat themselves are not being understood because of unclear or indistinct articulation or diction. There are certainly several other reasons we are asked that timeless question, “What did you say?” It could be that you are soft-spoken or perhaps you mumble or it could even be that you talk too fast. My focus here, however, is to discuss the lack of good diction. And, I am not just referring to those in which English is not their 1st language. There are many... (read more)

By Savitha Hira Photography: Courtesy: IAB ‘Architecture & Identity’ – the thematic of 3610 Conference, Mumbai, India hosted by Jasubhai Media was a platform for dialogue on architecture and fostered some thought-provoking exchange in some critical concerns of the discipline. 242. One of My Worst Moments in Public Speaking - But What a Great Learning Experience!
March 04, 2014

Mistakes will occur in public speaking. It is a fact. However, there are things you can do to avoid some mistakes if you know your audience. It was a lovely Saturday at a resort on Lake Huron in Canada. I was scheduled to give an afternoon talk to a few hundred lawyers and their spouses. All was well until I discussed a particular lawyer by the name of Julius Melnitzer. I described him as a most colorful man, explaining that his outgoing personality and colorful expressiveness were responsible for both his success and his eventual failure. At that very moment, the room went from co... (read more)

243. If Image Is Important, Do Not Ignore Your Voice - The One You Hear on Your iPhone
March 04, 2014

We tend not to think about it because the voice we hear in our head sounds pretty good. When we are confronted with our voice on an iPhone or voicemail, however, we are disbelieving. It’s a little like looking in the mirror when you're 50 pounds overweight and seeing yourself 50 pounds lighter. I remember one woman who attended one of my workshops. Upon seeing herself on video, she was appalled at her hairstyle. Because she was accustomed to seeing a reflection of herself in the mirror, she was not seeing the true picture. When I look in the mirror, I am not aware of my droopy left e... (read more)

244. Public Speaking: How to Be Persuasive Without Being Overbearing
February 18, 2014

The reasons for public speaking are many and varied. Valedictorians deliver graduation speeches. Politicians address audiences for their votes. Best men toast grooms. College students are required to give speeches as part of their communications courses. The list goes on and on. Some of these types of speaking engagements are informative; others are persuasive in nature. Those who seek a career in public speaking give presentations in order to sell something. These types of presentations are most definitely persuasive. So how do you move your audience to take action witho... (read more)

245. Nasaliity: How to Get Your Voice Out of Your Nose
February 18, 2014

Don’t you just hate it? The voice you know in your head sounds fabulous and then you hear yourself on your voicemail and suddenly you are subjected to a whiny, nasal sound that is unrecognizable. You may also find it embarrassing, appalling, or disgusting. Whatever your reaction, what you hear on recording equipment is true. What you hear in your head is the lie. Excessive nasality results in too much sound being sent up through the nose. There are certain sounds in English which most definitely should vibrate to some degree in the nose. Those sounds are the n, m, and ng sounds: an... (read more)

246. Keep Your Accent - Just Learn to Speak More Clearly
February 14, 2014

With the world becoming a huge melting pot, we are hearing accents wherever we go and whatever we listen to. This article is not about getting rid of your accent. Accents are part of what makes you, you. I would never advocate trying to eliminate it. The only problem with an accent or even a dialect is when your speech is unintelligible. Life is fast today; business moves in great haste; and being understood the 1st time you say it is more important than ever if you expect to succeed professionally and personally. Your goal should be to learn to speak more clearly. Whether it is... (read more)

247. Public Speaking - Perfection in a Live Performance Not Possible, Just Ask Barbra Streisand!
February 14, 2014

Considered one of the most demanding actors/singers in Hollywood, Barbra Streisand strives for perfection in all her films and recordings. In either of these 2 situation in which you can edit, touch up, add or detract her, you might be able to say that the finished product is perfect. However, if you are talking about a live performance, I am confident that Ms. Streisand would tell you that she has never achieved perfection. You may have found her performances excellent, sublime, fantastic, moving, and passionate. You may even say that she is the best in the business; but, her live per... (read more)

248. How Voice Training Improves the Soft-Spoken Voice
February 04, 2014

‘What did you say?’ How many times do others ask you those four simple words? Frustrating, isn’t it? If you are tired of constantly repeating yourself or having others ask you to repeat yourself, don’t you think it is time that you did something about it? Your volume is not something that will improve with age. Keep in mind that your ‘inner ear,’ which is how you hear yourself in your head, is most comfortable at the volume level you have been using throughout your life. One of your first steps is to record a professional voice from the radio or TV and then record your own voice ... (read more)

January 30, 2014

Correct body language is an important part of giving a great presentation. Your audience is focused on every part of you when you are giving a speech: your face, your body, your posture and your voice. There’s nowhere to hide when you are standing in front of an audience. To make your presentation the biggest success possible, it is important that you train your body to give the best impression. You spend so much time creating a great presentation. In less than a week, millions of Americans and Canadians will get together with friends and family to watch the largest sporting event in our country. And, during those 4 hours of play, a lot of fans will experience sore throats, hoarseness, and possibly even loss of voice. Many people will find their voice much improved in the next day or two; however, there are some who will begin to notice that their voices are not returning to their ‘normal’ sound or strength.
