Starting a dollar store and keeping it running afterwards are challenging tasks. This is because the success of the dollar store itself not only relies in the management and operations of the business but also on the relationship of the store with the customers being supported.

One of the most important things that the store owner must consider is employee training and development. This applies not only to those in management or the administrative office. It also applies to those who are actually working on the sales floor in the store itself.

When starting a dollar store it is a good idea to focus your employee training and development efforts in three specific categories. These are over-all store operations, departmental operations, and the most important of all, customer relations.

The Over-all Store Operations All employees must have a sound understanding of how the store operates. They must know where the operation begins and where it ends. Giving them a trip inside the store will make things a lot easier for those who are new to the company. Explaining to them what is done with each process is also important. This will tell them the possible consequences once a task is not done correctly or promptly.

Also, showing them the contents of each aisle and asking them to be familiar with the items found in it will come in handy later on when they start interacting and supporting the store’s customers.

Departmental Operations This is a more thorough and specific training when compared to the over-all store operations. If the first one gives the employees a bird’s eye view on what happens inside the store, this one is where it gets a little more serious. The departmental operations training will instruct the employees on the tasks and duties that are specifically assigned to them. The manner and method on how the task and duty are accomplished is also covered within this portion.

Customer Relations When starting a dollar store you will quickly learn that interacting properly with the customer is important in the success of your business. Therefore it is important to include customer relations instruction as a part of your employee training and development initiative. Most of the issues that the employees will be addressing are quite simple. It can be about a product: what are the brands available, which ones are tested and what is the price. It’s very important to train every employee about the specific products available in the store and where they are located. Another must-do for every employee is to address the customers politely and with a smile. Customers are more likely to keep coming back to the store as long as there are friendly employees just waiting to address their needs at all times – and always with a smile.

When starting a dollar store make a commitment to always provide the proper employee training and development to every one of your employees. This one step will definitely make a difference in the performance of your store. Be sure to provide all the train that’s needed for each employee to be successful in their job. Provide sound training on customer service, and then reinforce excellence in customer service once employees are actually working. Your business will reap the rewards as happy customers return time and again, and as shopper spend a little more time and money every time they visit your store.
