You've counted sheep, gotten up at 2am to exercise, been hypnotized, and have gone as far as trying to bore yourself to sleep, but nothing is working. You still find yourself staring at the clock as it ticks down until morning and another day running on empty. Insomnia can be a short term problem for some people, but others may experience it throughout their lives. Not getting proper rest can lead to increased stress, increase or decrease in appetite, loss of energy, mood swings, and many other serious health problems.

There are many natural remedies that may help chronic or just occasional sufferers overcome their battle with insomnia. Prescription drugs are highly addictive, causing more harm than good in many cases. Natural remedies can help ease sleeplessness without any of the negative side effects. Vitamins, herbs, and relaxation techniques can help you rest easy once again.

Before taking anything for this problem, vitamin, herb or otherwise, it's important to check with your doctor beforehand. Sleep difficulties can sometimes by symptomatic of a more serious illness that needs to be treated.

There are many vitamins and herbal supplements available that can help put you to sleep faster. B and C vitamins, as well as zinc, are often used to help overall health and well-being. A lack of these can cause stress or disturbed body functions. Sometimes a simple increase in these daily requirements is all that is needed for the body and mind to get back on track.

Another vitamin is Melatonin. This hormone that occurs in the body helps you fall asleep when you have had a disturbance in your natural sleeping habits. This is commonly used by people who have constantly changing sleep schedules, such as those who work graveyard shifts or those with young children in the house that upset the sleep cycle.

Magnesium and calcium, two vitamins often gathered through food, can help ease insomnia. A deficiency of one or both of these can create stress, feelings of nervousness, and restlessness, all which can cause you to wake up and toss and turn all night. Choosing calcium and magnesium-rich foods to add to your diet may be enough to knock you out, but you may also choose to take supplements as well. Similarly, folic acid, found in many foods such as orange juice, beans, and veggies, can provide relief as well. Vitamin versions are thought to be more effective and potent than what can be absorbed through food.

In addition to herbal supplements and vitamins, insomnia can be battled by relaxation techniques such as aroma therapy, music, and visualization. Changing your diet can be helpful as well. Certain foods or eating late at night before bed may cause restlessness, troubled dreams, and other sleep-related problems. Making small alterations may drastically improve your sleeping habits. If you still see little or no improvement with insomnia and accompanying symptoms following vitamin and herbal treatments, it's important to seek professional help.
