When people think of home security, the first thing they generally think of is burglar alarms. In most cases, though, alarms are only a small part of the overall security of your home. Read on to learn more about all the other parts of securing your home. |
The key to a secure home is often the windows. The burglars do not use the door; they break a window. Homes with less secure windows got visited far more often than houses with secure windows. So if you want to secure your home the best way, use the toughest glass possible and put a lock on the windows.
Never leave your windows open when you go out, either; even really high up ones that you wouldn't expect anyone to be able to get to. Also, never leave ladders lying around in your garden; lock them up in a garage or shed instead.
Even though windows are the weakest point, doors can also be easily broken; especially if they are thin and weak. So buy a sturdy and bulky door with a good lock that cannot be forced open easily. And never keep your keys together with your address. If you lose them, a thief will know exactly which house to visit.
And alarms are effective. But the most effective way to use them is as deterrent; and not as a tool to detect and catch a burglar. A fake alarm box can work very well to scare the thief away. Put one at the front door and another one on the back. Then the burglar will probably visit your neighbor instead, because like everyone else they want to make their job as easy as possible.
Front and back lights that come on when someone gets close also make a very good deterrent, as well as being convenient for you when you come home late and want to get the key in the lock.
If you follow those few simple advices, you home will be much more secure than it is today. And it will not cost you very much compared to the risk of break-ins that you avoid.
