Vitamin A is great for our skin. That was why the approval of the substance called tretinoin, derived from this Vitamin A, by the FDA back in 1971 made such an impact. Then it was approved as a prescription medicine for acne. Later, still under prescription rules, it was used as a more general prescription wrinkle cream and in fact was approved for that purpose in 1995. A similar ingredient called retinol is now used in many over the counter preparations but it is not the same as the tretinoin or retinoic acid, which still requires a doctor's prescription.
