We have a fellow back here who has got to be one of the most dedicated runners I've ever seen. He looks to be a Jamaican fellow, he has long dreadlocks, and is probably on the other side of 50. I live here in Baltimore which is a fairly large city. You have the city and surrounding suburbs on all sides of the city. I was out the other day and happened to see 'hey mon' on the Northern side of town running strongly in this 100+ heat wave that we've had back here on the East Coast. This is not surprising because I've seen him running just about everywhere. Forest Gump has nothing on this guy. Anyway, it got me to thinking what kind of positive addiction must this fellow have to be out there running in this unbearable heat? I've heard of people having these type of addictions that they call 'positive addictions' where they have to do their chosen type of activity daily or they tend to feel out of sorts, even depressed. I've also read that these people get a natural 'high' from this activity. There must be something to this because why anyone would get out there and jog 5, 10 miles at a clip in this weather makes one think that this guy is off his bonkers. I do admire his dedication, and you can see that it obviously pays off in that he has practically zero body fat, but man, how he manages to survive a run in this weather is amazing. I notice that he does carry a small water bottle that I'm sure he replenishes quite often, but there's no way you can replace the water that you're losing in this heat that quickly. I've never had this type of positive addiction that would compel me to go out and do something like run in a 102 degree temperatures. To me there wouldn't seem to be anything positive about it. I'm active and maintain a good level of fitness for my age, but not driven to this level of activity. No, if this is what a positive addiction is, I'm afraid I'll just have to make do with my not so positive ones. Bill Thomas lives in Seattle, Wa.
