Daniel Ochefu impresses at Conshohocken all star games There were two all star games last night at Conshohochen on Tuesday May 5th. A highlight of the evening was the impressive play of 6’10 sophomore Daniel Ochefu of Westown friends for the Independent schools in the second game which was very high scoring. Daniel was a dynamic presence on both offense and defense on just about other every play. He has an excellent array of movies on the offensive end with a quite good middle of the floor shooting touch, and an immediate willingness to take it right to the rack for a jam if the defense has the slightest pause. His playing style is exciting and fun to watch. I spoke to him after the games and he said it was to early to say what he would be thinking in terms of college and he said the playing style that he most relates to is that of Greg Monroe, an All American from Georgetown this year who is listed at 6’11 and is known for his highly skilled all around game that includes excellent passing and handling skills and keen floor vision. Each of the players for the independent schools played about half the game where the time was split just about evenly between the players. Even with the limited playing time, touted sophomore 6’6 Savon Goodman had about 12 dunks and was later named MVP of this game. He looks like a world class athlete especially in going to the basket from every possible angle on the floor. He has the super strong look and also is quite good with the handle and some of his drives were coast to coast. He basically owns the rim. He didn’t attempt any outside shots but there was no need to as he seemed to score every time as he is certainly swift, acrobatic and above the rim no matter what the defense is showing. Isaiah Baker at 6’7 from Episcopal Academy had some nice spot up J’s. Amile Jefferson a 6’7 highly touted sophomore from Friends Central was quite adept going to the basket, passed well, and hit some nice set shots from outside and characterizes as an alert offensive player who quickly takes advantage of the defense. Malcom Gilbert a 6’11 center from the Academy of New Church looked strong and ran the floor particularly well, offensively he looked smooth in the role of either dunking, or shooting a short jumper in playing within the framework of the team. For the Surburban Schools, 6’1 John Johnson scored in bunches with swirling drives to the basket, Andrew Nicholas a 6’6 wing forward from Eastern York was taking and making long threes and mixed in some power drives to the hoop, he also passed well. The score of this game swelled into 100’s midway into the second half at which point Suburban came back to within a dozen only to lose by 20. The first game was closer with a right to the wire finish between the Catholic League and Public League with the Catholic League etching out the victory. For the Catholic League 6’5 Rob Poole from St. Paul VI is a shoot the lights out type shooter who was shooting the lights out. It was also interesting to observe how quick laterally he was going to his left in particular and he combined this quickness with a quick release deep jump shot as well as also displaying some nifty passes on the run. He was named the MVP of the game. Within the tight finish to the game, Lamin Fulton, a 6 foot even guard from Neuman Goretti, had 4 baskets right into triple teams so that was quite impressive and he has an automatic stop and pop jumper as well as the ability to score seemingly at will when he wants to. For the public schools, 6’7 Jerrell Wright of Muriel Dobbins, was impressive both in driving to the basket and in hitting shots from well beyond 3 point range as he was the longest range shooter for the night. 6’8 Eric Copes of Imphotep Charter displayed good moves and a shooters touch. While the Public School started slow in this game, in particular 6’5 Markeith Mont of World Communications, 6’5 Ameen Tanksley of Imhotep Center, and 6’7 Anoth Fuscellero of Northeast High all displayed guard like skills despite being taller and stronger and it took an excellent and exciting performance by the Catholic league to win this game in the final seconds. Mind you that these are all underclassmen in both games and some of the players will end up even taller. In short there is a lot of upcoming talent in the greater Pennsylvania area in schoolboy hoops with the probability if all goes well with several future pros in these two games.
