Treating Damaged Hair

Fashion & Cosmetics,Health,Self Improvement
The way you wear your hair doesn't matter, whether short, long or medium-length, healthy hair is always more attractive than damaged, dry hair. Moderately or even severely damaged hair can be repaired by adopting a few basic care rules and by eliminating the actions that damaged the hair to begin with. Follow the steps listed below and the results will be almost instant and, after a few months, depending on the extent of the damage, you can bring your hair back to its former, healthy, natural glory.

Trim Split Ends:
The first step to treating damaged hair is providing a routine trim to eliminate split ends. Removing frizzy, dry split ends will prevent damage from spreading to the rest of the hair follicle. Despite the claim of any commercial product, nothing can repair a split end. The only way to treat them is to remove them completely. If the split end is allowed to remain for a long time, the split will continue down the hair shaft, causing even more damage. For the best results, have your hair trimmed once every sex weeks.

Choosing the Right Shampoo:
Harsh shampoos filled with chemicals are more harmful than helpful to your hair and scalp. They actually strip your hair of the natural oils and leave behind a residue that prevents the hair from holding in moisture, resulting in extremely dry hair. Repair for damaged hair is available in mild, gentle, natural shampoo, which should always be used to moisturize and rejuvenate.

Aloe vera shampoos are especially effective for damaged hair repair when used on a regular basis, even for extremely damaged hair. If a store-bought brand must be used, choose one that are specifically formulated for dry and damaged hair. Baby shampoos are effective and are far gentler on hair and result in less drying.

Shampoo Less Often:
A common misconception is that hair washed regularly is healthier than hair washed intermittently. This is not true, however, as constant washing causes dryness and damage to the hair, as the oils secreted by the sebaceous glands are washed away with each shampooing. To avoid over-washing, don't shampoo more than three times per week, and use one of the types listed in the section above.

Heated Hair Appliances:
Heated hair appliances, such as curling irons, blow-dryers, flat irons and hot rollers are extremely detrimental to healthy hair. The concentrated, direct heat they apply devastates the hair follicle and causes serious damage initially and over long periods of use. A blow dryer may be used under dire circumstances, but the heat should be set to low and the dryer should be kept moving at all times.

Chemical Treatments:
Chemical treatments for hair are also notorious for causing serious damage, especially chemical hair dyes, relaxers and perms. These chemicals lift the hair's outer cuticle, which has the primary purpose of protecting the hair. Only use natural hair dyes, and avoid relaxers and perms altogether, which are horribly damaging to hair.

Hot Oil:
Hot oil treatments are one of the best ways to repair damaged hair, as they nourish and moisturize hair while adding additional protein. Just about any vegetable-based oil is suitable, though olive, corn, safflower, avocado and wheat germ varieties work the best. They are easy to apply as well. Simply warm the oil, spread it over the hair, cover with a plastic cap and a towel, wait 30 minutes and finally rinse clean. Repeat once or twice per week for the best results.
