Hunab Ku, when translated literally to English, means "Only God" or "One God." The earliest references pointing to Hunab Ku as the only Supreme Being may be found in the 16th century Diccionario de Motul, although Hunab Ku also appears later on at the Book of Chilam Balam of Chumayel. The Mayan Civilization believed Hunab Ku to be the creator of all beings. The glyph or symbol that represented Hunab Ku was also said to represent, for the Mayans, the center of the universe, or what they called the Galactic Butterfly. As such, you might see that the symbol for both the Hunab Ku and the Galactic Butterfly are one and the same. For the Mayans, the Hunab Ku was used to represent some sort of gateway to other galaxies and even other forms of consciousness. It is the Mother Womb that gives birth to new stars, to life and even to other planets. It can also mean the union of opposites—the joining of the male and female, the coming together of the analytic mind and the philosophical one, the bridging of the conscious and the unconscious as well as the melding of the 'yin and the yang. It isn't surprising, therefore, that the symbol itself of Hunab Ku resembles a Yin / Yang symbol. According to several detailed calendars created by the Mayans, the Earth moves in cycles and after each cycle of 5,125, the "universe takes a deep breath" to restructure itself or to begin again. This, according to the Mayan Long Calendar, will occur at the Age of Itza, or Age of Consciousness, when Hunab Ku will fill all of humanity with consciousness, intelligent energy and awakening. The symbol and pattern for Hunab Ku was used in blankets woven by the Toltec or Zapatec weavers of long ago. It was also integrated in ritual cloak designs and is now found woven into rugs that are commonly sold in Mexico.
