Though there is no federal law regarding carrying a concealed weapon on your person, individual state laws vary. Currently forty-eight states allow citizens to carry certain weapons in public. Alaska, Arizona, and Vermont allow one to carry a concealed gun without any permit, others require that a permit be obtained after meeting certain requirements, which may include taking a training course on safe handling and proficiency. Restrictions on concealed carry have been less restrictive in the past 20 years, with only Wisconsin, Illinois, and the District of Columbia now having No-Issue policies, or outlawing concealed carry for non-law enforcement citizens. It’s worth noting that having a concealed carry permit in one state does not necessarily allow for legal concealed carry in another. Check on the laws in each jurisdiction to determine the specific legalities before carrying a concealed weapon when traveling to other states. Those who are able to carry a concealed weapon legally need a way to accomplish that in a secure, safe, and comfortable way that keeps the weapon out of sight in public. Some will opt to carry the firearm in a purse, briefcase, fanny pack, or backpack. These are all acceptable methods, though there are drawbacks. One negative aspect of this approach is limited accessibility to the weapon. In an emergency situation, it could be difficult to get to the weapon in time. Another negative aspect is that by not carrying the weapon directly on your person, it could be lost or stolen more easily. For instance, someone steals a purse with the handgun inside. There are a number of different designs of the concealed gun holster, including shoulder holsters, back holsters, side holsters, and ankle holsters. They are constructed in a range of materials, designs, and release mechanisms, designed to be worn inconspicuously under clothing. Being worn close to the body, they need to allow for comfort and movement, while being held securely. Easy and quick accessibility is an issue as well, with some holsters making it easier than others to quickly remove the weapon and replace it as needed. Shoulder holsters are dependent on a jacket or some other outer covering to remain concealed. Waist-type holsters often require wearing trousers with belt loops to attach to, or even require wearing trousers with larger waistbands to accommodate the bulk of a firearm and holster at the waist. Many demand that a shirt remain untucked in order to stay concealed, limiting clothing options. Whatever type of holster you choose, look for comfort regardless of position, standing or sitting, and secure fit under clothing. Consider accessibility, depending on your anticipated needs, to ensure that your weapon is where you need it, when you need it.
