South Carolina, like every other state, is a state that abides by both federal and state laws. These laws come from the federal government and their own state government. Due to the fact that each state has their own local government that can make up unique laws to that state, it leaves room for some unique and interesting laws to be enforced. South Carolina lawyers have to be aware of many interesting and unique laws that differ from other states. This article discusses just some of the unique laws that South Carolina’s local government offices have put into place. One unique law in South Carolina, for example, is that it is illegal to put a confederate flag on a courthouse. Now, this is understandable considering the history of America’s civil war. It is, though, interesting that such a law should be created and actually kept for this fine state. Another interesting law that many have felt is outdated is the fact that the state of South Carolina says it is illegal for their dance halls to be open and operating on Sundays. While this is an odd law to many people, South Carolina does allow business activities to continue on Sunday. For instance, they do allow light bulbs to be sold all seven days of the week. Those who are interested in telling fortunes for money, though, must obtain a permit from the state. The state is the only entity in South Carolina that can sell such a special permit and it is against the law for fortune tellers to tell fortunes without such a permit. This means that anyone who is interested in moving to South Carolina to open up a business of telling fortunes may want to check into the costs associated with getting the correct permits. A particularly interesting law that South Carolina has for their state is the one that holds railroad companies liable when they scare horses. While it is the railroad that is usually responsible for scaring horses as they speed by with a high volume of noise, no other states appear to hold their railroad companies responsible for horses that are startled by the trains. Although this law is unique to South Carolina, it appears to have lasted the test of time. Another law that many find to be exceptionally outdated is this next one. When an unmarried woman is promised marriage by a man, he must by South Carolina law marry her. This means that a verbal contract of marriage is binding and that men should not offer marriage unless they really mean it. Indeed, there are many interesting and unique laws in South Carolina.
