Moving to a new town can be an exciting adventure. It is also a big adjustment. Moving to a new neighborhood, town or state can be an adventurous time for an individual or a family. There are also some big adjustments to make. When we live in one locale for an extended period of time, we find comfort in many of the familiar people, places and things that we’ve grown accustomed to. Many items that are taken for granted before leaving them behind are missed after a move. There are steps a person or family can take to get happily settled into their new home. - Meet the neighbors: It helps to be open and friendly to all that live in your new neighborhood. Even if you’re feeling shy, a simple smile and a hello will be an ice breaker. Try to smile at everyone that you come into contact with and some of these individuals will no doubt become friends or dependable neighbors. - Explore the shops: Search on the internet for grocers, department stores and restaurants then drive over to the ones that sound appealing to take an in-person survey. Stroll the aisles of the grocery stores, window shop or peruse the department store and read menus posted at restaurants. It’s nice to become familiar with what’s out there in order to decide which ones you’d like to try out. - New hairdresser: Where does one get their haircut in a new location? One place to find out is by looking at people’s hairstyles in your new vicinity. If you see a cut that you really like, go over to inquire about their stylist while mentioning that you like their hairstyle. Most people are flattered and happy to provide the information. - Walk the kids and dog: One way to get an up close view of your own neighborhood or various parts of your new town is by taking a walk. Driving through will provide some information, but there’s nothing like strolling through it on foot to really be able to check it out. This is another great way to make contact with members of your new community. - Join the YMCA: Most towns have a YMCA or community gym that a person or family can join. Not only can everyone take classes and work out in a great facility, but this is a wonderful place to meet like-minded individuals. - Church, synagogue or Sangha: No matter what religion a family may be, gathering with others at your temple of choice is another good way to connect with others in your community. - Meet-up groups: Either via the internet or local newspapers, a person or family can find out about groups that meet who have similar interests. Examples include book groups at the local library, dog walking groups, hiking groups and even those who like to meet for an afternoon at the movies. Being a bit proactive will generate lots of fun activities and new friends which will provide comfort after moving. In Philadelphia, moving from rowhouse to rowhouse can be such a pain.
