5 Reasons to use Hawaii's Public Transit System

Real Estate,Travel & Tourism
Those coming to live in Hawaii will find that not everything here costs a fortune. Although Hawaii Real Estate can be sometimes steeply priced, the state does feature an excellent system of public transport. From buses to trolleys covering the main island of Oahu, to buses on Kaua'i, Maui, and the Big Island, inexpensive options are available to suit every budget. The following paragraphs detail the five reasons to utilize Hawaii's public transit systems.

First Reason to Use Hawaii's Public Transportation - The Buses Are Cheap

Among the best features of the Hawaii public transportation networks are the fact that the buses are cheap. One way fares are only $2.50 per person, and they include a free transfer with every cash paid fare. All that a person has to do to obtain such a free transfer is to ask for it when he or she boards the bus and pays with cash for the fare. Such transfers are good for two hours and have the expiration time printed on the transfer's top. Plus, children who are only five years old or younger are free, one for each fare paying passenger. The public buses could be the very best deal in all Hawaii, except for maybe the free trolleys.

Second Reason to Use Hawaii's Public Transportation - There are a Number of Free Trolleys

Although there are paid tourist trolleys widely available throughout Honolulu especially, some trolleys are available to hop on and off of completely for free. The Waikele Trolley is one of these free trolleys. It operates a route that runs between the Waikele Shopping Center and the outlet mall. This trolley runs a large loop through a number of far flung parking lots, taking shoppers to a number of different stores and restaurants. It is so popular an attraction that many riders are not there to get from one point to another, but simply to ride around and see the area. It does get crowded on weekends and at the Christmas holiday shopping season.

Another of these free trolleys is the Hilo Hattie's free trolley. It makes a nice alternative to the paid ride Waikiki Trolley as well. The drivers here sometimes offer orientation and other general information on the main island of Oahu. This trolley will stop at a number of points along its route, including the Ala Moana Shopping Center.

Third Reason to Use Hawaii's Public Transportation - Longer Time Frame Bus Passes Are Available at a Discount

Another great reason to use the Hawaii public transportation lies in the fact that the buses offer longer term time frame passes for discounted tickets' purchase. Monthly passes can be bought for only $60 per person. These allow for unlimited use of Express and regular bus service during the full calendar month in which they are bought. The year long annual passes run a reasonable $660 per person, and similarly allow for unlimited Express and regular service throughout the entire calendar year in which they are bought. Both passes are a great value, but they do exclude special services, like the Football Express.

Fourth Reason to Use Hawaii's Public Transportation - Bicycle Racks Are Available

There might not be a better way to enjoy the beauty and wonderful year round weather of Hawaii than from the back of a bicycle. The question is how to get the bicycle from one's house, apartment, or hotel, to the place that he or she wants to ride it? Hawaii's public transit system provides the answer with their bicycle racks included on all of the buses. Now an individual, couple, or whole family is able to take along their beloved bicycles with them wherever they go on the islands.

Fifth Reason to Use Hawaii's Public Transportation - The Buses Pass By Popular Attractions

Besides possibly taking a bus from or to work or school, new residents of Hawaii will be pleased to know that the buses pass by popular tourist attractions as they move along their various routes. The bus will take them to most any place on the island that they would want or need to go. Oahu is not the only such public transit system on Hawaii either. The Big Island offers the Hele-On Bus that takes passengers all over the island. They also offer a door to door transportation sharing arrangement in the Shared Ride Taxi program that starts at only $2. Kaua'i has both a fixed route bus service and a door to door bus service as well. Maui's public bus transit service may be more limited, but it still gets passengers to and from the major attractions and towns.

These islands feature wonderful houses, townhomes and condos in addition to their excellent public transit system. Not all of it is unaffordable either, as any realtor like Aloha Tony can tell you. There are two bedroom and two bathroom condos available within walking distance of Waikiki starting at $1,200 per month rent, including utilities. House prices average a fairly reasonable $200,000 and range on up to the half a million dollar and million dollar plus range, depending on their size, age, and location.
