When most people think of limousines, they think of glamour, luxury and movie stars. These vehicles seem to be the automotive equivalent to Cinderella’s elegant coach transformed from a pumpkin by her fairy godmother. When a special occasion such as a wedding or prom arises, many people want their own modern version of a fairy godmother to tap her magic wand and produce a limo at their front door. Here are some factoids and tidbits about the alluring limo: - The first limousines were created in 1902 and were designed so that the vehicle’s driver had his own compartment. - The first stretch vehicle was made in the late 1920’s by a company in Arkansas. These stretched out autos were manufactured in order to tote around big band leaders and all of their musical equipment. The “big band buses” hauled around famous musicians such as Benny Goodman, Glen Miller and their instruments, band members and entourage. - The term “limousines” is derived from the French language from a word which originally referred to a shepherd’s cloak garment. - The glass between the chauffeur and passengers is often sound proof in order to allow the customers privacy during their conversations and partying festivities. There is a sliding window which may be opened and closed, as needed, as well as an intercom system. - A chauffeur must hold a standard driver’s license, a CDL which stands for a commercial driving license and must also meet certain requirements in order to transport fifteen passengers at one time. - The chauffeur must have on-the-job training as well as up to eighty hours of classroom time. - The person behind the wheel often must wear formal attire in their duties, such as tuxedos, black tie and suits or ball gowns if the driver is a female. - Novelty vehicles: Some of the standard limos are stretch Lincoln Town Cars and Cadillacs in either black or white. There are also some stretched out vehicles which are a bit more of unusual novelties. Some examples are Hummers, Volkswagen Beetles and Fiats. These novelty selections come in a variety of paint jobs and colors, as well. - Party Buses: Another even larger version of the limo is the party bus. These vehicles can hold more passengers and are decked out with fancy upholstery, electronics equipment, wet bars, strobe lights and restrooms.
