The game of Bingo can be traced back hundreds of years to 1530, where it was originally an Italian lottery called "Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia." To this day, "Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia” is still played every Saturady in Italy. In the late 1770’s, Italy introduced the game to France where the name was shortened and it was simply called “Le Lotto”. Le Lotto was reserved as a game played mostly among wealthy Frenchman. In the 1800s, Germany picked up a version of the game. However, in Germany, the game was used as a learning tool for children to learn math, spelling and history. Finally, in 1929, the game reached North America and became known as "beano". Beano was first played as a carnival game near Atlanta Georgia. The dealer would select discs that were numbered from a cigar box and players would mark their cards with beans. If they won, they would yell “beano!” A man by the name of Edwin S. Lowe, renamed the game “bingo” after he heard someone accidentally yell “bingo” instead of “beano” and the name stuck. Lowe hired a math professor, Carl Leffler, from Columbia University to help him increase the number of combinations in bingo cards. By 1930 Leffler had created 6,000 different bingo cards and it is said that Leffler then went insane. As Bingo became more popular, a Catholic priest in Pennsylvania asked Lowe about using Bingo as a way in which he could raise church funds. Bingo then began being played in churches across the country and by 1934 it is believed that an estimated 10,000 bingo games were being played weekly. Today, more than $90 million dollars are spent on bingo each week in North America alone.
