Ron Nechemia, the Chairman of the EurOrient Financial Group (”EurOrient”) the Board of Governors expresses his condolences on behalf of the EurOrient, the private sector global development finance institution accredited by the United Nations General Assembly on Financing for Development, yesterday for passing of the U.S. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. Mr. Nechemia conveyed the EurOrient’s admiration for Ambassador Holbrooke’s distinguished career as well as his “energetic and unrelenting commitment to promoting peace and strengthening international cooperation and for his various contributions toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals.” The members of the EurOrient Financial Group Board of Governors are deeply saddened by the passing yesterday of their dear friend and colleague as well as an extraordinary United States diplomat, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. The former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations fell ill on Friday during a meeting at the State Department and had surgery on Saturday to repair a torn aorta, the body's principal artery, and died yesterday. He was 69 years old. Mr. Nechemia says: “Today, I lost a dear friend and the world lost one of its greatest warriors for peace. Ambassador Holbrooke was was one of a kind - a true statesman, who through his brilliance, determination and sheer force of will helped bend the curve of history in the direction of progress. Ambassador Holbrooke saved lives, secured peace and restored hope for countless people around the world.” Remembering Ambassador Richard Holbrooke Ambassador Holbrooke’s service spanned decades and continents, confronting profoundly difficult issues in global affairs. For nearly 50 years, Ambassador Holbrooke served the U.S. with honor and distinction. He worked as a young Foreign Service officer during the Vietnam War and then supported the Paris peace talks which ended that war. As a young Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, he helped normalize relations with China. As U.S. Ambassador to Germany, he helped Europe emerge from a long Cold War and encouraged NATO to welcome new members. As Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs, he was the tireless chief architect of the Dayton Accords that ended the war in Bosnia 15 years ago this week, saving countless lives. As Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador Holbrooke helped break a political impasse and strengthen the relationship with the United Nations and elevated the cause of AIDS and Africa on the international agenda. And throughout his life, as a child of refugees, he devoted himself to the plight of people displaced around the world. At the time of his death, Ambassador Holbrooke served as the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan. The members of the of the EurOrient Financial Group Board of Governors expressed their deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of Ambassador Holbrooke, in particular his wife Kati Marton and their family David, Anthony, Elizabeth, and Christopher, as well as to the people of the United States and the friends of Ambassador Holbrooke around the world.
