Does your hair smell funny? Due to the nature of hair, it commonly acts like a net, catching odours, scents and dirt that are in the air. Styling products, such as mousse, gel or hair spray make it easier for these particles to cling to your hair. Even when you wash your hair, some residue and build up can still clings to the strands. That's why you should deep cleanse your hair at least once a month. A deep cleansing can bring back the bounce, shine and manageability of your hair, plus remove any toxins, chemicals and build up. Depending on the type of treatment you use, the deep cleaning can occur before or after shampooing your hair. Hot oil treatments are generally applied before you wash your hair, while conditioning treatments are applied after you wash. Some people opt for both. If you're using a hot oil treatment, let it sit in hot water for at least a minute to heat up before applying it to your hair. Hair should be wet before it's applied, and make sure you work it in from root to tip. Allow it to penetrate the hair shaft for a few minutes to nourish and detoxify your hair, before rinsing with warm water. Wash your hair with a clarifying or moisturizing shampoo. You should gently massage the scalp while you wash to make sure all traces of the oil treatment are gone. Rinse and repeat. The rule for shampoo is wash once for the hair and once for the scalp. You will notice that you get more suds and bubble on the second wash. That's because the shampoo isn't being weighed by dirt and debris in your hair, allowing bubbles to form. After washing, condition as usual or apply a deep conditioning hair mask. Conditioners don't need to to go all the way to the roots, but it's important to cover your strands to the tip to avoid tangles. Conditioning the roots can weigh down your hair, making it difficult to style. If at all possible, let your hair air dry. If you must use a blow dryer, apply a heat protection serum or spray before hand to help protect your hair from damage. Also, use the low or medium setting to avoid flash burning your hair.
