Deep circles or shadows beneath the eye occur when there is a build up of fluid below the skin. It's more common as we age, since the skin begins to sag naturally, making the swelling more apparent. Aside from aging, dark circles and puffiness below the eye can also come from allergies, illness, poor diet, not enough sleep or in some cases, it can be a hereditary trait. However, under eye circles can be controlled by these three simple steps. 1. Cut Back on Salt! Salty foods, believe it or not, are a big factor in the appearance of dark shadows beneath your eyes. Too much salt increases fluid retention, so the body does not naturally drain it away as it should. The fluid beneath the eye creates a look of puffiness, and often shadows are cast to create dark circles as well. Reducing your sodium intake and avoiding salty snacks will allow the fluid to drain naturally and reduce the dark circles. 2. Vitamin B: A deficiency of Vitamin B will often result in puffy and swollen eyes. Eating foods rich in Vitamin B or taking a supplement will greatly enhance your appearance and get rid of the bags. 3. Get a Good Night's Sleep: If you skimp on sleep, your eyes will show it. You need at least 8 hours of beauty rest each and every night. You should also make sure it's a restful sleep, since things like televisions or radios can often prevent us from entering the deep rem sleep our body needs. Following these three steps should show a dramatic improvement in your eyes in as little as a few days. Understandably, sometimes we are robbed of our sleep or other circumstances will cause our eyes to look swollen and dark in the morning. If this happens, try rubbing the area with an ice cube for a quick fix to bring down the swelling. Don't forget, even in winter months, a good pair of sunglasses are your best defence to keep your eyes looking young, fresh and vibrant.
