There's an old folk remedy that rubbing a pimple with aspirin will clear it up. According to dermatologists, this is more than an old wive's tale, it's actually true. As long as you're not allergic to aspirin or ASA, a couple of aspirin will indeed clear up your skin. The active ingredient in most blemish reducing skin care products is 1 to 2% salicylic acid. The scientific name for aspirin is actually ASA, or acetylsalicylic acid. Yes, it's the same component that makes acne medications work. Most of the ASA tablets we buy today are enteric coated to prevent stomach troubles when digested. This coating makes the tablet dissolve more slowly, so the medication isn't released until it has made it to the digestive area. Therefore, when using aspirin or unbranded ASA tablets, rubbing them on your skin won't work until you've taken the coating off. The easiest way to remove the protective layer and dissolve the ASA tablets, is to place them in a small bowl and add a couple spoonfuls of boiling or very hot tap water to cover the tablets. In about ten minutes, the coating will be washed away and the medicine will be dissolved in the water. ASA is typically heavy, so it's easy to drain away the excess water, as the medicine does not float in the water. Once you've drained the water, you can easily powder down the dissolved particles with a spoon. Once the pills are ground, add a couple teaspoons of honey, aloe vera, or even add the ground tablets to your favourite skin cleanser. Rub the mixture onto your face, and let sit for no more than fifteen minutes before rinsing away. You'll be amazed at how quickly this works, and how much less expensive a couple aspirins are compared to brand name acne reduction products. However, you may wish to reduce the amount of aspirin you use if you find your skin is drying out, as salicylic acid tends to be dehydrating. Make sure you always follow up with a good cold rinse to close the pores, and a moisturizing lotion. Within a couple days, you'll have clear, smooth and soft skin.
