Keeping up with lost moisture isn't as easy as one might think. Drinking plenty of water, at least six to eight glasses a day isn't always enough to prevent dry and damaged skin, hair and fingernails. We all know water is the wonder drink when it comes to maintaining overall health, as well as keep our skin young and fresh looking. However, there's more to it than just pouring a glass from the tap. If at all possible, spring water is the best water you can ingest. The label on the package should indicate that your spring water was bottled at the source, for optimal freshness. If natural sourced spring water isn't available, your second choice is mineral water. Water from your tap should run through a filter before you drink it. Many of the agents found in household water, such as chlorine, can cause you to retain water, leaving you puffy and swollen looking. Plus, filtered water usually tastes better. How much water should you really drink? It actually depends on how you spend your day. If you work in a physically intensive job, you should drink more than eight glasses. A general rule is each thirty minutes of intense physical activity needs eight ounces of water replenishment. The same rule applies to playing sports, jogging and running, or working out at the gym. However, it doesn't always have to be water you use to rehydrate. You can eat fruits and vegetables with a high water density to keep your body in balance. Too much water can be just as damaging as too little, because it dilutes the body's natural enzymes. Eating water rich foods or drinking sports drinks will keep your electrolytes at a higher level and prevent water toxicity. Hydration starts on the inside, but must be retained from the outside. A good moisturizer that doesn't contain a lot of chemicals and preservatives should be applied after showering or bathing. Moisturizing lotions made from natural plant extracts such as shea butter, cocoa butter or aloe vera are excellent for sealing in moisture and keeping skin glowing and radiant.
