I recently went on a city break to Amsterdam with my husband. It was the first time for us to take a city break. We were advised by friends of ours to try one after they returned form a long weekend in Prague. Myself and my husband Mark have been used to taking beach holidays. The last place we visited was Mexico. I was a little bit apprehensive of going to a city for a holiday as I feel that holidays are for relaxing, but I was willing to learn new experiences, so thought why not give Amsterdam a try. Amsterdam really did offer a truly different experience. As it was our first city break we decided to keep it to two nights. We flew from Bristol airport on the Friday morning early and returned on the Sunday evening. The flight was great it was only 50minutes long, the shortest flight that either me or Mark had ever been on. The stewardess came around with drinks and then the next thing we knew, it was time for landing. This was a great start to the weekend. NO time wasted on travelling as we only lived 30 minutes from Bristol airport and were told that the city centre was only 20 minutes by train to Central station form Schiphol Airport. We booked into the Citadel hotel on Dam Square as we were assured that this would be a great base for seeing the city. The hotel had a perfect location it was close to the Central train station and all the other tourist attractions. The culture that Amsterdam had to offer was immense. We were truly taken aback by the infamous Red Light District. It was a completely different experience to anything we had ever had before, it really was and eye opener, but worth seeing. The people in Amsterdam were very friendly, it was never too much to ask for directions and anybody was willing to help. You really had to keep your wits about you when it came to the bikes there. I nearly got into a few accidents with the bikes; they are all over the place. It is great to see so many people using them though while in the city instead of using their cars, it is so much better for the environment. Amsterdam really did have a lot to offer, especially for our first city break. The canal trips were great; there was a vast amount of museums to visit. Dam square for live music was an amazing experience at night. I really liked the leidsepliein as of course it was packed with Amsterdam’s most famous attraction (well to some people) the smoking cafes. We had to go in and visit one; I mean you couldn’t go to Amsterdam and not experience one of those. So yes to sum up our first city trip that we took to Amsterdam was a truly different experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. If you want to achieve a lot better experience, try last minute travel (Do you know that in Danish the term is Prøv afbudsrejser).
