In some adults, that are also suffering from other illnesses like liver failure or cancer, group B strep can and will often cause dangerous infections. Still a vast majority of just are just simple carriers of this group B strep, meaning we don’t feel sick and we aren’t manifesting or showing any symptoms of a disease what so ever. As an interesting fact the group B strep that is is present in healthy people is actually left untreated. There is a small category of people that need to be treated, and those are pregnant mother s to be. There is the high risk that the bacteria will spread to the baby in the case of a vaginal delivery, when the baby can be exposed, or can even swallow, fluids containing group B strep. Medics have seen that the babies of women that are carrying the group B strep are actually born very healthy. The ones that do get infected with the bacteria can become critically ill. An analysis of cases has shown that premature born babies are the ones that can suffer the most from being infected with group B strep. Doctors have seen that the group B strep can take two major forms when infants are infected. Early onset seems to be the more common and serious form of the disease. The case with this type of infection is that the baby actually becomes sick within hours of delivery. It most often starts with fever, difficulty in feeding and lethargy. The risk is very much there that some of them will develop life threatening complications, such as inflammation in the lungs ( pneumonia), inflammation of the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), or infection in the bloodstream (sepsis). Late onset develops in the bay within a week or a few month after birth. Problems that develop in this type are quite the same as in the first one but the impact is seen to be usually less severe.
