High blood cholesterol levels can result in serious health problems. We agree with this affirmation because persons with high cholesterol levels can develop many other conditions because of the mentioned problem. Among the conditions that can be developed because of the high cholesterol levels we have to remember cardio-vascular disease, gastro-intestinal disorders, kidney failure and in some cases even cancer. It is well known that many factors contribute to the accumulation of cholesterol. Age, gender, genetic heritage, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, inappropriate diet, smoking and alcohol are only a few of the contributing factors that help in cholesterol accumulation. Statistics say that about 20 % of the US population has high levels of cholesterol and more that than they are at risk for developing heart problems or circulatory conditions. People can not stop the accumulation of cholesterol inside their body but they can help in getting the levels back to normal by quitting smoking, by avoiding alcohol intake, by following a proper diet or by exercising. Cholesterol divides in two subtypes. We know about low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein. The first mentioned subtype is considered to be the bad cholesterol, while the second one is also called good cholesterol. The excess accumulation of bad cholesterol can be harmful in most of the cases. Its accumulation might lead to a blockage of the normal blood flow by sticking to the inner walls of arteries and by forming a plague. When good cholesterol clogs the coronary arteries there is a risk of heart disease. The good cholesterol has the role of collecting low-density lipoprotein in the bloodstream and to bring it to the liver. Here, the good cholesterol is broken into other substances. Ideal are a high level of good cholesterol and a low level of bad cholesterol. For this to happen you have to follow a good diet. It is recommended the consumption of low cholesterol foods instead of the fast food or processed supermarket foods. Among the low cholesterol foods we have to remember unsaturated fat, plenty of vegetables and fruits, vitamins and minerals. It is recommended to avoid eating saturated fat rich foods such as meats, diary products or eggs. Fruits are also recommended because they contain natural anti-oxidants which decongest the arteries clogged with cholesterol. For avoiding eating the same food every day you should also try low-fat meat and you should also include fish in your diet. Reducing carbohydrates is also important.
