The Ionian Sea is one of the three seas that wash the coasts and beaches of Greece. This is actually an arm of another sea, the Mediterranean, and is situated south of another sea, the Adriatic one. Greece is one of the most blessed countries in the world for having an opening to no less than three seas. However, each one of them is special in its own way, and even if most of you are delighted by the idea of going to Greece to bathe in the Mediterranean Sea, you should think twice before taking this decision. Yes, I agree with you that this particular sea is more popular and more renowned, but it does have a great competitor, the Ionian Sea. This sea is bounded in the south- east by many Greek islands, that are mostly known as the Ionian Islands. Italy is in the south part of this sea. Even if the Ionian sea is not that well- known, mainly because it is smaller than the Mediterranean, the cities found along the coast of this particular sea are of a rare beauty. The small dimension of the Ionian Sea is the reason why it is considered an arm of the Mediterranean. The Ionian Sea is known to be one of the most seismic seas in the whole world. Moreover, some believe that this it actually is in the top three of seismic places in the world. It is also a very deep sea, especially in the part of Greece. However, many believe that this is what makes this sea so beautiful and attractive. It is a wild, stormy sea that amazes you with its blue waters, wild rocks and amazing variety of wild life. More than this, the name of the Ionian sea has a very interesting history that makes you be more and more drawn to his little part of Greece and its wonderful islands and ports. Ionius was the name of one of Dyrrachus’s sons. At one point this man was attacked by his brothers who were thirsty for power and to his aid came Heracles, who was traveling through that country exactly at that time. However, by mistake, this man killed in battle the son of his allay. The corpse of this young man was thrown into the sea and this is how the Ionian Sea got its name. This is a sad but captivating tale that makes you much more intrigued by this little but “big ” sea. There are many ports that are washed by the clear waters of the sea, some small others large, but all of an astonishing beauty. Parga, Syracuse, Catania and many others, all extraordinary in their own way. Greece has a lot to offer, from amazing sceneries to a great culture, food and traditions and the beaches of Greece are some of the most beautiful in the world.
