The down economy has made many college students wary of choosing a degree. Although certain fields of study, such as construction management, are doing poorly in the recession, others in the health care field continue to thrive throughout this slump. One of the most lucrative and secure fields that a college student can currently go into is nursing. Estimates show that the U.S. will need over one million new nurses in the field by 2016, which means that more college students should switch into that field if they want job security in the future. One of the best aspects about a nursing degree is that there are a lot of routes students can take to get there. Students, who wish to quickly get into the field, can attend a nursing school in Des Moines that offers LPN degrees. LPN stands for Licensed Practical Nurse, and this degree typically takes only one year to receive. Students with LPN degrees can assist resident nurses and doctors in certain settings. Like with any degree, the more education a person has, the more responsibilities he or she can have. An Associate’s degree in nursing, or an ADN, qualifies a student even more for the nursing field. People with ADN degrees can usually act as nurses in smaller settings, such as a physician’s office. Typically those with an ADN degree still cannot act as a resident nurse in hospitals. Receiving a Bachelor’s degree in nursing gives a college graduate the most options out of any of the other degrees. With a Bachelor’s degree, a graduate can work as an RN, or resident nurse, at a hospital. Those with a four-year degree can also go on to get Master’s degrees, which will give them more options for their future.
