Students with interests in holy writ can find many theological resources online. These crash courses take a student on a journey that teaches them about the religious meaning and historical value behind the scriptures. Theology is the study of religion and in turn involves much study of the various scriptures that present doctrine, principles, and common practices found in churches today. Most of the time, scriptures are old writings that have been passed down through generation to generation and have gone through various translations. The Bible is the most recognizable cannon of scripture in secular western civilization. The Bible translates from Latin to literally mean “books.” Like the Bible, the Torah, which is the predominately studied scripture in Judaism, is very similar to the Old Testament of the Bible. They differences between the scripture root in the differences of opinion about the divinity of Christ. Christians believe that Jesus was the son of God, while Jews tend to think of him as an inspired prophet. Other canons of scripture are thought to be inspired include the Koran. Said to have been revealed from Allah to the prophet Muhammad, the Koran outlines the numerous customs and laws that are strictly followed in today’s Islamic world. One problem arises from written word is the ability to understand the words in a plenitude of ways. For this reason, many religions share the same scriptures with other religions that are different from them. In the study of Judaism, if a student has reached a level of worthiness in their study and application, they can request Smicha. Under the direction of an authorized Rabbi, Smicha can be bestowed a student found worthy.
