Honestly it’s hard to imagine my parents aging. I still imagine them in their younger years chasing me around the yard and doing their best to keep up with me. I also postulate that their aging reminds me that I am not exempt from aging either and I don’t like such reminders. As I move closer to the middle-aged category myself, I have started to think about long term care for my parents. My siblings and I have decided I am in the best position to care for them out my home. I have started to prepare for their arrival in my home (hopefully not for a few years though) by making sure they are as comfortable as possible with amenities such as walk-in tubs and bars along side all the commodes. Increased independence for my parents is important to me and when I install items (like the walk-in tubs), it gives them more freedom and privacy for the everyday activities some of us have grown to take advantage of in our healthier years. Along with increased autonomy, I know that my parents will feel like less a burden on me when they don’t need help bathing and can simply walk into a tub (instead of climbing). I also feel more comfortable giving them the tools necessary to stay as safe as possible and avoid what could be a catastrophic accident. As you consider caring for your aging relatives don’t forget details like a walk-in tub that could make a huge difference in their quality of live, as well as yours.
