Losing weight can be especially difficult. Sometimes a jump start, such as lap band surgery, is all that is needed to help you lose weight and change your lifestyle. Lap band procedures are not for everyone, though. Be sure to consult with your doctor to see if lap band surgery is right for you. There are some basic qualifications you should meet before getting lap band surgery. |
1. You should check your BMI. There are two different recommendations for BMI and lap band procedures. First, you should have a BMI that is 40 or greater. A BMI level of 40 or greater is categorized as level III obesity, which is the highest category. Second, if your BMI is between 35 and 40 but you have a serious obesity related medical condition that could be life threatening if not treated. These conditions are diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, sleep apnea, etc.
2. You should have at least 100 pounds or more to lose.
3. You should have tried to lose weight under a doctor’s supervision for over a year but have not been successful.
4. You should be committed to making a complete lifestyle change after the surgery. Getting a lap band does not change eating habits built over a lifetime. After the initial weight loss if you go back to your old eating habits, you will gain all the weight back that was lost because of the lap band. Only a change in lifestyle that includes eating a proper diet, eating the right amount of calories, and exercising can make a lasting change.
