A specialist in medical education, Dr A S Sekhon is an expert in the field of community medicine. But what really sets him apart is his love for antiques, a hobby which has grown into a passion over the years. Currently the dean of Gian Sagar Group of Institutions, Sekhon is an avid lover of all things traditional. Thanks to his ‘biswedar' lineage, he has a rich collection of antique household articles that he has inherited from his forefathers. This includes crockery, cutlery, dining accessories. There are articles that are truly representative of Punjabi tradition. Then there are English goods which his forefathers got as momentos from their British friends. Sekhon has proudly displayed these articles all over his home that has been aesthetically done up. Born in a family of biswedars of the erstwhile Patiala state, Sekhon is now settled in Kaulgarh House in the New Officers' Colony of Patiala. He proudly talks about his collection of antiques. Among the prized collections is a walking stick gifted by Lord Linlithgo, Viceroy of India, to his father, Sardar Siasat Singh, who was a superintendent of police, way back in 1938. Then there is a two-century-old sword of Sardar Charhat Singh, Sekhon's great grandfather, who features in the picture of the 'zamindars of Punjab (1816)', which adorns the Victoria Albert museum in London. As one moves around his house, one can appreciate the thoughtfully accumulated pieces of art. A pair of intricately woven metallic shoulder applets - belonging to Sekhon's grandfather who was in the 2nd Patiala Lancers - adorns one of the walls in the house. Having a. collection of hunting weapons and accessories that he has inherited, Sekhon started his own personal collection by buying art pieces from the markets of England. Portobello Street at Nottinghill Gate in London is the favourite place where he buys his pieces of art. Having started visiting markets looking for art pieces, Sekhon says, "I gradually acquired a certain amount of expertise. Acquiring antiques has been entirely my personal effort as I was not born into a family of antique collectors." Summing up his collector's experiences, he says, "It's been good and satisfying. If I find something interesting, I don't mind paying the price for it." -------- Punjab News quality and exclusive reporting to the Punjabis settled worldwide.
