In a relief to the farmers of Doda village in Punjab's Giddarbaha tehsil, which has an acute problem of water logging, the Punjab and Haryana high court has directed Punjab authorities to restrain from destroying the nursery for paddy crop sown by the farmers. The bench headed by justice Rakesh Kumar Garg issued the directions while issuing a notice of motion to the Punjab government on a petition filed by 47 farmers of Doda in Muktsar district. The petitioners said they were transplanting their paddy crop at an earlier date so that it could be mature enough before the rainy season so that it is not submerged in the rainwater. The petitioners had sown nursery for paddy crop in the second and third weeks of March. However, the petitioners said authorities were destroying the nursery under the garb of the provisions of the Punjab Preservation of Sub Soil Water Act, 2009. According to the Act, no farmer is allowed to sow nursery of paddy before May 10 of the agriculture year or such other date as may be notified by the state government except in areas affected by water logging. Advocate Baltej Singh Sidhu, appearing for the petitioners, said tile nursery was being destroyed despite the fact that under the directions of the high court a survey was conducted and the area was found to be affected by water logging. It was also brought to the notice of the court that to overcome water logging, the government had installed shallow tubewells on the right side of the Sirhind canal starting from Faridkot upto the Rajasthan se border and including Doda. Water of shallow tubewells is thrown away in the canal to reduce water logging. Director of agriculture, fin Punjab, BS Sidhu told Hindustan Times that more than 50 villages in Muktsar district, including Doda, were hill affected by water logging. Other than this affected areas Pal include parts of Hoshiarpur and Pla Gurdaspur districts. Around one-lakh acres in the state is affected by water logging, according to the data of the agriculture department.
