At one point or another, everyone will be confronted by tooth cavities. The question then is: how can the dentist best fix this problem? Usually, your dental expert will give you a selection of traditional cavity fillings to choose from. The pros and cons of each type of dental filling will be explained to you before restorations commence. Common dental restorative materials include: • Dental amalgam – These cavity fillings are durable, withstand biting well, are inexpensive and resist leakage. Their application can be completed during one visit. People often refer to them as ‘silver fillings’. • Composite resin – Made from powdered glass and plastic resin, these fillings resist breakage, last long, do not corrode and hold up well during biting. They do allow a small amount of leakage. • Glass ionomer cement – This mixture of inorganic acid and glass is generally used for small fillings, temporary restorations, crowns and liners. The fluoride they release helps prevent further decay. This material is not recommended as a permanent solution and biting surfaces. • Resin ionomer cement – This material consists of glass, resin polymer and organic acid. It hardens when exposed to blue light and is often used for small fillings. Expect very good esthetics, fluoride release, and excellent resistance to leakage. Resin ionomer cement can produce low tooth sensitivity and is fairly expensive. • Porcelain – Ceramic material is tooth-colored. It is used in crowns, veneers, inlays, and fixed bridges, because it resists further tooth decay and leakage. Porcelain cavity fillings do not cause tooth sensitivity. • Gold alloy – A mixture of gold, copper and other safe metals is applied to fix crowns and permanent bridges. This material is extremely durable, prevents further tooth decay, resists leakage, and will not corrode in the mouth. Unfortunately, it is very expensive. This tooth restoration procedure requires several dental visits. About The Author A person’s smile is one of the things that they truly can say that they own.
