We likely all remember fun times from our childhood that took place at a playground, or on playground equipment in our own yards. Playing is a great way for children to learn and explore. One popular piece of playground equipment, the merry-go-round, was especially popular at many playgrounds. Pushing the merry-go-round, jumping on, and then holding on was exciting. |
In recent years, the merry-go-round has been removed from most playgrounds for safety reasons. Children haven't developed their brains enough to understand the risks of spinning the merry-go-round too fast, and kids would frequently get hurt playing on these toys. Serious injuries were the exception rather than the norm, so there were mixed reactions to merry-go-rounds being removed from playgrounds. Kids deserve to have fun, but nobody deserves to get hurt by it.
Today, new merry-go-rounds have been engineered and are being reintroduced to playgrounds. These new toys offer many advantages over the older models, so it is time to give back to our kids the fun they deserve.
The most important improvement that has been made is that new merry-go-rounds are much safer. They are built to limit the speed at which the merry-go-round can twirl. This speed reduction stops anybody from being flung off the merry-go-round and injured. It also insures that no children passing by are in danger of being hit by the moving parts of the equipment. These improvements take merry-go-rounds from a somewhat dangerous toy to one of the safest toys on the playground.
Toys such as merry-go-rounds also promote exercise. With childhood obesity growing, it is important to provide incentive for our children exercise. Fun is as powerful an incentive for a child as anything. Making the merry-go-round spin takes physical effort, and by seeing that exercise can translate into fun, children will associate exercise with fun going into the future, making them more likely to exercise and less likely to rot in front of the television.
Merry-go-rounds, above all else, are fun. Kids need to play and have fun in order to develop and grow. Parents and teachers know that getting a child to sit still can be nearly impossible. We need to allow them with as much fun and excitement in their playtime to reward them for sacrificing their need to move for hours at a time.
Merry-go-rounds were removed from playgrounds for a reason. They were dangerous. But that issue has been addressed now. Bringing newer merry-go-rounds back to playgrounds will provide fun and exercise to children without risking their safety.
