Boils usually begin as a staph infection within a tiny tear on the skin most commonly around a hair follicle. If your immune system is suppressed at that time due to overwork, lack of sleep, or some type of infection such as the common cold, the staph infection can overcome your body's natural defenses. Most antibacterial soaps are too harsh and kill the beneficial bacteria as well as dry the skin too much, causing it to crack, leading to more infections, further exacerbating the problem. You can also lose your body's natural immunity to infection with the constant use of strong antibacterial soaps. There are circumstances that will make you more prone to boils. These include, as previously mentioned, a suppressed immune system, lack of proper nutrition, poor sanitation and hygiene, diabetes, and constant scratching and itching of the skin. Also certain deodorants and cosmetics can cause a skin rash, creating tiny openings in the skin and a perfect breeding ground for staph infection. Towels, linens, sheets, and clothing that come in contact with the skin of the person with the boils infection should be kept separate from the rest of the family. Boils can be contagious and the infection can spread to the rest of the family, especially when pus is coming out of the boils.
