One of the most complicated facets of a car is its automatic transmission. Because transmissions are so complicated, they often can have problems. When a transmission has problems, it can be very costly. With proper maintenance you can have a smooth running transmission for a long time. Check the ground underneath the car where you park. If there are fluids that are leaking onto the ground, contact your Austin transmission mechanic immediately. Paying attention to leaks when they are small can help prevent major problems later. Periodically check the transmission level in your car. Change the transmission fluid regularly. Follow the recommendations in the owner’s manual for frequency and type. If the fluid is dirty or more of a dark brown color rather than red, have an Austin transmission mechanic change it, even if it is in between scheduled maintenance. When you change your transmission fluid, you can’t drain all of the entire fluid out. You can actually only drain off about 60 percent of the fluid. With 40 percent of the old fluid always remaining in the car, it is important to change it regularly and keep the old fluid diluted. Be careful how you shift your automatic transmission. Never shift from reverse to drive or from drive to reverse while the car is moving. It should be at a complete stop before shifting. When you shift out of park, be sure to have applied the brakes before shifting. In addition, don’t shift out of park when the engine’s RPMs are faster than their idling speed.
