Children love to play pretend, and allowing them to focus these impulses and desires into a performance is something that many of them adore. Enrolling in a Walnut Creek children's theatre program can give your child the recognition he or she desires, as well as teaching him or her valuable life skills. For older kids and teens, it can help pad college applications, and open doors to opportunities such as art schools. Young children can enroll in loosely-structured programs where everyone gets parts and 'helpers' are available for assistance with lines. These children get to enjoy dressing up and practicing essential life skills such as public speaking and taking turns. They also get the attention and adoration of their parents while on stage, which is their major interest at this age. Older children and teenagers might enjoy a similarly non-competitive program, or they might want to start working with a program that holds auditions. While it can be devastating not to be cast, or to be cast in a role that they didn't want, the chance to compete with their peers for the top spot gives them a healthy chance to shine. City recreation departments, art programs, and community theaters often have programs that allow children to enroll or audition for parts in plays. As a healthy, non-destructive, creative endeavor, many boys and girls clubs, churches and other programs offer these opportunities as well, in an effort to keep kids out of trouble. Like any creative or artistic program, it's best not to force enrollment on a child. While some reluctant participants later become great fans of the art, there's a big difference between reluctance due to shyness or not knowing what's involved, and a real desire not to participate. Children forced into programs they dislike can become bitter towards the entire area of creativity, and miss out on later opportunities. Standing Ovations is a Walnut Creek Children’s theatre as one of the San Francisco Bay Area's best directors of children's theatre, began directing his summer programs many years ago.
