The concept of a software inventory might sound like the different software packages sitting on the shelf at your local computer store, but is software even really sold that way as a rule anymore? The words software inventory more commonly refer to knowing what software you are running on your computers, not what software you have on your shelves to sell. Most of your software inventory comes from applications that were downloaded from internet sources. With the speeds which we connect to the web today, using a physical media object like a DVD has become largely obsolete. What runs on your computer remains as it always has been, an application that is setup and installed and most often requires a license to operate on that computer. That is where the heart of software inventory management lies: The licensing aspect. There are countless applications in existence, and the larger the company, the greater the software inventory base in use across its users. There are ways of keeping track of this software inventory that range from a pen and paper to a spreadsheet to an automated system scan run from a central console. Keeping an accurate count of software inventory is vital to good records management and key to protecting both the company and those responsible in the event of an audit. Most companies do not intentionally let their software inventory fall out of step with licensing, but it does happen simply due to the challenges inherent to tracking dozens of programs installed across hundred of computers. This level of complexity shared by teams of people independently installing applications leads to chaos on occasion and the software inventory can slip behind. As long as efforts are made to correct the software inventory as soon as this disconnect is realized, then that conscientiousness across all members of the team will conspire to keep software inventory in step.
