EMR is an acronym for electronic medical records. Even though records are still paper documented the electronic ones seem to be easier. This is because instead of having to look through a whole bunch of paper work the staff and doctors are able to pull up the records by just searching the computer. Also this saves them a lot of time. Electronic medical records also save facilities a lot of money. The reasoning behind this is because it costs a lot to be able to store all of these medical records when they are paper documented. Many states even require that the facilities keep the patients records for at least seven years. The costs also go up because if the paper work needs to be transferred to another facility it I going to cost money for it to be faxed and transported. However, with electronic medical records all of the information can be easily pulled up in the computer system. Electronic medical records have been around for at least thirty years. However, most facilities did not start using them until recently. But it is still just over fifty percent of facilities that use them currently. Like medical records these documents still must not be altered for any reason. If the whole system is electronic then the patient still has the right to ask for the original documents if they see it fit. However, electronic documents have been proven to be way more convenient then the paper ones because everything can be processed from the computer, even down to the signatures. The only complaint people have about the electronic medical records is that they see them as not being as private as the medical records. This is because anyone in the facility can easily access them. Also some of the people who do the billing can see at least part of them. However, they are still under the HIPPA law as well as others. Prime Clinical Systems (http://www.primeclinical.com) designs and installs EMR systems that are easy to use and easily customized to the individual EMR requirements of individual medical practices and professionals.
