I can’t tell you how many guys and gals I talk to that want to get in shape but are trapped in their lazy, inactive lifestyles. For those of you that are seeking an escape from your sedentary ways, here are some ideas. Most of you probably have a desk job or a no job at all. You spend each waking minute busy as you could possibly but find that you hardly move a muscle all day long. You are not alone my friend. And there is still hope. The secret lies in the little things. I will refer to them as Big, little things. Big, little things are activities that you would not think would make any difference at all. Let’s say you have a desk job. You work nine to five every day and then go home to a crazy house full of energetic kids and the very thought of it puts you to sleep due to complete exhaustion. An example of a Big, little thing you could do to wake your body up would be to cut back on the caffeine and jog to and from your car, laundry room, or outside dumpster. If you’re lucky, you live on the third story of an apartment complex. Challenge yourself to run up and down the stairs twice before going inside your house and getting in your car. My point is, you have got to realize that you can continue to live this way. One day you are going to go in to your doctor’s office for your annual checkup. He’ll run some tests and come back out with some bad news. He is going to tell you that you have high blood pressure, cholesterol, or at serious risk for heart disease or cancer. Then, and only then, will you finally decide to make some changes. But by that point, it might be too late. I’m not telling you to join a gym and quit eating good food and workout for three hours every day because that is what everyone is telling you and you’re still not doing it. Obviously you have got to go about it in a different way. You need something that actually appeals to you and sounds fun. Get out a piece of paper and grab a pencil and start writing down some things that you really like to do. Suppose you used to love riding your bike but you haven’t done it in twenty years. Write it down! Maybe you have always wanted a dog but lacked the courage to actually buy one. People have lost serious weight just from walking their dog every day. Write it down! Think of sports like basketball, tennis, water polo, or running. Ooo running! The terrible “R” word; I know. You don’t even have to RUN, just walk or jog around your block every night. This is better than going straight to the old “boob tube” every night right after your microwaved dinner. The trick that gets a lot of people moving is they get themselves some kind of music player. Maybe you already have one, great! But think about what you have. . . You have a device that has proven to shoot energy throughout your body via sound waves and promote physical movement. Get your favorite song put on your iPod and rock out as hard as you can. Get yourself pumped about finally making a change in your life. It is time for you to escape the everyday routine. Quit rolling from room to room, office to office. You have got to figure out small ways that you can wake your body up. The most important thing is that you stick with whatever it is you decide to do. Don’t get all excited for a week and then quit. Seek help from friends, family, and peers to go walking with you or whatever it may be. DO NOT be ashamed of trying to lose weight. You don’t have to make it known to the world but be proud of your efforts. Trust me, others will be proud too. I’m proud of you. You’ve taken the time to read this entire article so you must be serious. I wish you all the luck in the world. All you need to do is to work on the Big, little things and everything else will fall into place. You will start feeling better both physically and emotionally, I guarantee it.
