No one answer is correct. All three components of your delivery are equal in value because in normal conversation, most people make use of vocal variety in their voice, facial movement that adds to their expression as well as the use of their arms, their torso, and, their legs. The problem in public speaking is that some people stand perfectly still because they are unsure of how to use their body or what to do with their hands or how to be expressive with their face when addressing an audience. The simplest answer is that what you do in normal conversation is what you should do in public speaking. The bottom line is that you should be yourself. Of course, that may also be the problem. If you tend to speak in a monotone in normal conversation, then the chances are likely that you will speak in a monotone at the lectern as well. If such is the case, you should take a course in voice improvement in order to work on allowing for vocal variety in your delivery. This article is not meant to deal with that particular problem. The purpose here is to discuss the value of using your face, your hands, and your body when addressing an audience. If you are giving a presentation, for example, you will probably not want to use a lectern. Lecterns are for speeches. Stages (or the front of the boardroom or classroom), on the other hand, are for presentations. This means that you have room to move, to get close to your audience, and to talk to them just as if you were having a conversation in your living room. So what happens to your hands and body when you are presenting? What should your face be expressing? Allow me to answer those questions with a question. What do you do in normal conversation with your body and your face? If you are excited, does your face show that excitement? Do you use your hands when describing an exciting venture? Do you turn or move when talking in conversation, moving your weight from one side to the other, or shifting in your seat as you speak? If you answered yes to these questions, then why don’t you apply the same principles to the delivery of your presentation? If you will treat your audience just as if you were in conversation, I guarantee you will be more interesting, expressive, and enjoyable in your delivery.
