The term reference material has a profound effect on every industry. Controls, standards, blueprints are part of the reference material used to check the traceability and the quality of products or information. For journalist and other writers, it has one meaning while having another meaning for manufacturing engineers, architects, pharmaceutical industries, physicians and all other fields. The term reference material may mean a point of reference, a blueprint, a standard, a gage or an encyclopedia. In the manufacturing field reference material is the base that all other products are inspected and controlled. Metal and plastic parts are made to a blueprint. The blueprint is the standard in which all the parts have to comply. The metal used in the manufacturing industry may also have to comply with reference material called out in a material specification. Metal parts are tested to ensure that the chemistry of the metal meet the required reference material or standard. Some metal parts also have to comply with physical properties to ensure the material complies with the fatigue or breakage requirements found in the reference material. Some metal parts need to comply with non destructive testing measurements to determine if they have cracks or holes that are unacceptable. The use of reference material to determine the safety of products keeps consumers safe. A journalist, on the other hand, may be writing or reporting information that they gathered from a particular source. When they report or write about the information, they are required to include reference material. This is required to indicate where they received the information for credibility purposes, and to give credit to the person or entity that provided the information. Companies often have to comply with national and international certification and accreditation. The standards are based on reference material. Without reference material and quality control the world would not be as safe as it is. Airplanes are built from standards, airlines have to follow strict guidelines, and pharmaceutical companies must follow procedures and standards. All of these requirements come from reference material that is put in place to make the entire world safer and more honest.
