Swimming is a great way to get in your daily exercise. It works so many main muscles in your body. It can also be fun for those people who don’t always enjoy running on a treadmill every day. When you are swimming on a consistent basis, you want to be sure that you understand how you can add some variety to your workout. There are many different styles of swimming and you want to reap as many benefits as you can. First, you should make sure that you understand the basics of swimming. Swimming freestyle should come easy to you and you should be able to complete a freestyle workout before you start to dabble in other forms of swimming. The butterfly stroke is a great stroke when you want to get a great workout. It may look complicated, but when you dissect the movement, you may be able to learn how to do it yourself and get the same workout when you are in the pool. When you get into the pool, you will want to start with your legs hold together. When your legs are together you should also make sure that your arms are out above your head and your hands are jointed together. This means that your head is going to be facing the bottom of the pool and that your head will be between your elbows. This is the basic starting position and you should be sure that you always start your swim here. Second, you will then want to kick your legs up and down in a whipping motion. This means, that your kick should start at your hips and you want to bend your knees and whip them when they kick. There are a lot of people that struggle with this motion. If you are struggling with this motion you can think of your legs moving like a dolphin would move or even the way that the fin on a mermaid would move. Third, you want to pull both of your arms through the water and beneath your body at the same time. They should move at the same speed and their movement should be symmetrical on either side of your body. When you do this, you will find that your body will propel forwards and that it will also propel out of the water. Bring your head out of the water and take your breath quickly so that you are not going to get water into your mouth. After your breath, you will then want to bring your arms forward up over your head. Your arms should reenter the water at the same time and your head and the rest of your body should follow in a diving motion. When you get this motion down, you will then want to repeat it throughout the length of the pool. It can be frustrating at first, but with some practice, you will be able to find a pattern and rhythm that your body is comfortable with. Also, when doing the butterfly, you will notice that your body will become very sore after you first do this stroke. It works your muscles so hard, your whole body will be sore. If this is the case, take a break from that stroke for a while and allow your body to heal. As you are allowing your body to heal, you can either do less strenuous strokes while swimming, or you can do a small workout on a treadmill to help yourself stay active while your body heals. This stroke will take some time to develop properly. Make sure that you allow yourself the ability to perfect the stroke and that you practice it consistently so that you have the opportunity to be successful. If you are swimming every day for exercise, make sure that you change up your workout a lot so you don’t get sick of it too quickly. A lot of people don’t have this problem because swimming is so much fun for them. But if you feel you need a break, you can jog around the neighborhood or on a treadmill at home.
