Cosmetic surgery is a form of plastic surgery. While plastic surgery also includes reconstructive surgeries to mask or heal effects of serious accidents and injuries, cosmetic surgery is more known as being an optional surgery. Cosmetic surgery deals with maintaining, restoring, or enhancing normal appearance in order to achieve an aesthetic ideal. Cosmetic surgery is not only a luxury for the rich. In 2007, close to 12 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the United States. That number is definitely not only covering the elite, upper-class citizens, but middle-class as well. There are both surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. A common surgical procedure is a rhinoplasty, or more commonly known as a face lift. A common nonsurgical procedure is laser hair removal, which is becoming more and more popular and many people probably would not even consider is a cosmetic surgery. Most cosmetic surgeries are known by different names to the average American. For example, you might be able to guess that an abdominoplasty is something that involves the abdomin, but if I said a tummy tuck, you would know exactly what I meant. Blepharoplasty, however, is a little harder to decipher. Blepharo actually means eyelid or eyelash, and a blepharoplasty is a surgery that reshapes the eyelids, or applies permanent eyeliner to the eyes. If you are considering a cosmetic surgery, make absolutely sure that you have a trusted and accredited plastic surgeon. What could be worse than going into a rhinoplasty (nose job), hoping for a cuter, smaller nose, and coming out with a beak instead?
