The C that many jewelers leave out is certification. Each legitimate diamond comes with a certificate that not only explains all of the aspects of the diamond, but also certifies that this is an authentic, hand-picked diamond. Second hand jewelry stores will not typically provide buyers with this type of certification, which is why it’s better to buy from a more established jeweler. The second C is cut. The cut has to do with how well the diamond cutter shaped the diamond. The nicer a diamond is cut, the better it will reflect sunlight. Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. One carat is equal to one-fifth of a gram. Therefore, the higher the carat weight, the bigger the diamond will be. Higher carats cost more than lower carats. The third C is color. Diamonds actually come in a variety of colors, although the most common type of diamond is colorless. Completely colorless diamonds are the most sought after because it means they are more pure. However, some people enjoy canary, or yellow, diamonds or would rather have black diamonds in their jewelry. The last C is clarity. Clarity refers to how perfect the diamond is when looked at very closely. Many diamonds have small fractures or blemishes, which makes them less valuable. The fewer amount of flaws a diamond has, the most expensive and sought after it will be.
