From the earliest civilizations in time clothes have been used as a form of protection, decoration, and a display of wealth and class. All of these civilizations have added something of their own history to our jigsaw clothes until what we wear has become a compilation of the ages that have passed on before us. There are remnants of every civilization imbedded within the jigsaw clothes that we wear if you look hard enough. Ancient Greece and Rome- The Greeks and romans are famous for their togas and sandals. Even today the same style of sandal is worn by women. Shirts with draping fabric or cut outs in the sleeves and shoulders are akin to the togas worn in these ancient civilizations as well. The Italian Renaissance- The renaissance brought us pointed shoes. The only difference is that theirs were pointed to the extreme. Some of the shoes worn by the men were so long that they had to have garters with strings or chains attached to their legs down to the tip of their shoes so that they wouldn’t trip over them while walking. The 20’s- The 20’s were famous for lavish beaded gowns and flapper dresses. If you look closely you can see this style and silhouette repeated in party dresses available today. They may not be dripping with beads but they do have rows and rows of silk fabric strips or ruffles. The silhouette is the same, but the materials are slightly altered. These and many other styles are taken from history and reused over and over again with different materials and worn in a different way. It just takes a little history to spot a world of possibility when it comes to clothing.
