Summertime is the best time of year for road trips and adventures. People all over the country hop in their cars and head off for fun vacations in the sun. Unfortunately, summertime can be an awfully hard season on vehicles. Not only do gas prices peak in the summer, but cars take quite a beating due to the heat and driving. This summer, be prepared for the road trips by taking proper care of the vehicle beforehand. During the winter, car owners deflate their tires in order to get better traction on slippery roads. Once the summertime hits, many people forget to inflate their tires again. This can cause the driver to get really poor gas mileage, and can even cause a tire to burst. Use an air pressure gauge to return the tires to proper air inflation. Even the nicest Kia in Michigan can overheat during the summer season. On long road trips through hot deserts, it’s important to be prepared for the worst. Drivers should always keep a 2 gallon jug of water in their trunk just in case their vehicle overheats on the side of the road. Driving more during road trips means that the oil in a vehicle needs to be changed more frequently. Especially during the summer, it’s important to never go over 3,000 miles on one oil change. This can cause the vehicle to get very poor gas mileage and could also cause more serious engine problems. In order to get the best mileage on road trips, clean out the trunk of the vehicle in order to lighten the load a bit. The heavier the vehicle, the worse gas mileage it will get. A lighter load gets further on a tank of gas.
