One of the largest sports fan bases in America belongs to racing, especially NASCAR, which boasts about 75 million fans. Football is the only professional sport in America ranking above NASCAR in fans and television viewers. The acronym, NASCAR, represents National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. NASCAR began back in the late 1940s, as a family owned and operated business venture of the France family. The primary headquarters are in famous Daytona Beach, Florida, where drivers originally raced directly on the beach itself! NASCAR Racing Series NASCAR operates as a national sanctioning body for stock car racing, overseeing three main divisions or series: Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series, and Camping World Truck Series. The Sprint Cup Series is the most popular and highest level of professional stock car racing competition, as well as the most lucrative for sponsors, drivers, and related personnel. Jimmie Johnson is currently NASCAR'S title holder of the driver's championship, as a five-time consecutive Sprint Cup Series winner, a new record over former driver Cale Yarborough's three in a row championship record. The 2011 NASCAR season has 36 races scheduled. The Nationwide Series is the next level of professional stock car racing, with fewer races per season and substantially lower amounts of prize money for race wins and finishing positions. Many future Sprint Cup drivers get their start in the Nationwide Series. Brad Kesolowski is the current driver championship title holder, from the 2010 series. The Camping World Truck Series actually features modified pickup trucks instead of stock cars. The Truck Series has even fewer races per season than the Nationwide Series, and comparable prize money awards. Some of the drivers from the Truck Series have advanced directly to the Sprint Cup Series. Todd Bodine holds the driver champion title from 2010, his second title in the Truck Series. *Interesting Note* Some Formula One and IndyCar Series drivers have even joined the ranks of NASCAR drivers, either on a limited or permanent basis. Among these are Dario Franchitti, Jacques Villenueve, Sam Hornish Junior, A.J. Allmendinger, Tony Stewart, and Juan Pablo Montoya. The "cross-over" driver who has stirred up the most attention, however, is IndyCar sensation, Danica Patrick, who participated in 13 Nationwide races in 2010. She also plans to drive in an undetermined number of Nationwide races in 2011. NASCAR Fans: Get Your Gear!
