The transition period from high school to a university can be difficult, especially those who have been diagnosed with ADHD. However, there are options available in college for ADHD students to help make the transition smoother and much more bearable. Perhaps the most important thing that needs to be done is to contact the Office of Disability Support Services at the given school. This office is dedicated solely to helping those with a variety of disabilities receive the support needed to help them be successful in the classroom. This means that they will work with the students and the professors to provide the necessary accommodations. Such accommodations can include but are not limited to extending time on tests and assignments, reduced course load, or priority registration. Additionally, being open and communicating with professors will allow them to have a better understanding of the circumstances at which point they can develop a plan to best suit the needs of the student. Other steps to take include being an active participant in courses and making oneself known in the course. Class sizes in college can easily exceed 100 students, making it easy for a student to get unintentionally looked over. Constantly making oneself known in the classroom and reminding the professors of your presence can help them remember ones specific needs better. It may also be very helpful to take advantage of the office hours of a professor to get the one on one treatment that can help one strive in the post secondary educational environment. At the end of the day it is entirely up to the student to make their needs known to the college they choose to attend. They will not know if they are not informed and they cannot help if they are not informed which is why a student with ADHD has to be responsible and act on their own behalf.
