For whatever reason, dental practices have gained a reputation as being painful and scary, especially for children. Although in the past this might have been true when dentists were using more primitive tools. But the advances in modern dentistry today make a dental visit nearly painless. For an adult, this concept is relatively easy to grasp and you can probably reason yourself out of any feelings of discomfort or anxiety. But with kids it's a different story. An unfounded fear of the dentist can result in uncomfortable tantrums at home and in the dentist office. But today there are many solutions to help eliminate your child's fear of the dentist. Your child needs to feel comfortable the minute they walk in the front door. Every child will be different and find comfort in different ways so you need to find a dentist that makes your child feel at ease. Another great solution to help eliminate a fear of the dentist is a process known as sedation dentistry. Sometimes, no matter how child-friendly and understanding your dentist is, your child can have an irrational fear that leads to anxiety and tantrums. Sedation dentistry utilizes pharmacological solutions such as nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing gas, to help calm your child. Advances in dental tools such as laser equipment can also help calm fears because lasers eliminate the sound and vibrations of traditional drills and tools that can scare children. When looking for your family dentist, make sure he or she has these tools in place.
