Here David, from verse 1, feels the need to flee, despite his high status with God. Obviously he was an intelligent king but the lesson here is that everything that happens needs to be read realistically and being Christian and having a close relationship with the Lord will not leave you totally immune to harsh elements, some of the them man made, and some of them natural. In verse 3, it says, “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do? It is beyond the control of the righteous if cities are crumbling right before their eyes, being on the right side of God realistically doesn’t give one control in the physical plane over such matters. If a ship is going to sink, it is going to sink. Within all this, regardless of all else that is happening, God’s eyes are upon us if we are righteous in his eyes. He will examine the righteous. Meaning he is mindful of you and also your ways. David here felt the need to be on the run and circumstances were against him. Verse 1 says," In the Lord I take refuge, How then can you say to me, Flee like a bird to your mountain." In this case, the man who faced Goliath was humble enough to realize his situation was dire and called for retreat and outright running away. There was nothing he could do. If David, given his exalted position at that time, could come to such a conclusion then there is room for more humility for anyone coming up in history. There is a holy deference to all that is out there and what can be done in any given circumstance about it. Referring again to verse 3, where it says, what can the righteous do, David was referring to himself in part, saying, he couldn’t do anything about it. This was an admission to both himself and God. I had a conversation recently with a friend, and they mentioned how JFK was interested in being a journalist and if he had just stayed in that realm he would have averted the eventual tragedy. We know historically he was pushed towards the presidency by his father. And if he had just been a journalist, that he would have never been involved in that particular tragedy. I was thinking about this, and maybe it was more valuable to all concerned had he just been a journalist. No one would seem to say this, most might say it was more important that he had the crowning achievement of being President and the tragedy that ensued was secondary to his place in history. But then you wonder if JFK himself could have foreseen his future, would he have made the choice still for the Presidency. The moral here is, what is most valuable and your life is what is most valuable more so that any crowning success and David was willing to run and let go of any idea of success realizing just how valuable he was successful or not. The highest value in this situation to David, was his own personal safety and we can see David was brilliant from his God inspired writings alone. . Even though David wasn’t on the side of success in fleeing like a bird, he realized that being on the righteous side of things in God’s eyes was the first call of order, and this fleeing did not affect his status that way, or how the eyes of God perceived him. . Verse 5 says, “ The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked and those who love violence his soul hates." He is right up close and personal, with the righteous, the wicked have an entirely different lot. Verse 7 concludes, “ For the righteous, he loves justice, upright men will see his face." Despite that in this particular time and place, David was overcome by the violence of his enemies and made the call to flee, the ultimately rule of the day and every day was what God was going to do, and realizing that he couldn’t do anything, as the foundations were being destroyed, whatever was eventually won and lost here, did not affect the truth of the separation between those who had God’s eyes upon them for face to face consultation, lasting communion, and consolation and those who didn’t.
